Oropharyngeal Airway

The Oropharyngeal Airway (OPA) is a basic airway management device used to maintain anatomical patency in the mouth and pharynx. It prevents the tongue from falling backward, maintaining a patent upper airway. It is widely preferred in emergency medicine, ambulance services, TCCC, and hospital settings to maintain the airway in patients who are unconscious or lack protective reflexes (no gag reflex).

Purposes
• To prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway in patients who are unconscious or have suppressed reflexes.
• To stabilize the airway during positive pressure ventilation (PVM).
• To provide temporary airway support in preparation for intubation.
