Oropharyngeal Airway
The Oropharyngeal Airway (OPA) is a basic airway management device used to maintain anatomical patency in the mouth and pharynx. It prevents the tongue from falling backward, maintaining a patent upper airway. It is widely preferred in emergency medicine, ambulance services, TCCC, and hospital settings to maintain the airway in patients who are unconscious or lack protective reflexes (no gag reflex).

It is widely preferred in emergency medicine, ambulance services, TCCC, and hospital settings to maintain the airway in patients who are unconscious or lack protective reflexes (no gag reflex).
Purposes
• To prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway in patients who are unconscious or have suppressed reflexes.
• To stabilize the airway during positive pressure ventilation (PVM).
• To provide temporary airway support in preparation for intubation.
• To facilitate airway management in emergencies such as trauma, cardiac arrest, and respiratory arrest.
• To ensure safe passage of the suction catheter.
Advantages
• Curved design conforming to the anatomical structure: Facilitates insertion and ensures correct positioning.
• Soft, rounded edges: Minimize trauma to the oropharyngeal tissues. • Bite block: Allows catheter passage during BVM applications and suction procedures.
• Color-coded design: Allows for quick selection of the correct size; saves time in emergency situations.
• Sterile and single-use: Reduces the risk of infection.
• Latex-free: Minimizes the risk of allergies.
